I have been asked by Engineereed Efficiency to post my blogs on their site. Naturally, I jumped at this opportunity!

The plusses are:

1. More people will see my stuff (wider audience)
2. Personal gratification

The minuses are:

1. More people will see my stuff so it better be right (wider audience)
2. Personal humiliation.

So my posts will appear on the Civil3D.com site. Well, from what I can see - nothing! Part Builder looks and feels like it has now for several releases which is unfortunate.

If I were to take a poll on how many users feel confident with Part Builder, that number would be minuscule compared to their knowledge of, say parceling. I have heard some joke that you need a PhD to figure out Part Builder.

To get to Part Builder in Civil 3D 2010, You have to go to the Modify tab and Design panel. Select Pipe Network. The Pipe Networks contextual tab will appear (its blue). From the Network Tools tab, select the fly out on Parts List and you will see Part Builder.

I've played with it enough, like others to come to the conclusion that I'm an idiot when it comes to this part of the program and it shouldn't have to be that way! I was viewing the famous Lynn Allen's AutoCAD 2010 Tips screen cast and the part about parametric design had a real sour taste in my mouth with our present version of Part Builder. You see the very rich-laden ribbon for all those constraints - and the AUTO CONSTRAIN! Oh wow.

Oh Autodesk, why do you tease us? Maybe what we are seeing in AutoCAD 2010 is a foreshadowing of things to come to pass in future versions of Civil 3D. I (and others) hope so.

Civil 3D 2010 - Happy Arbor Day

In honor of Arbor day today, I thought I'd show you how to place Multiview objects (also known as MVBlocks), specifically TREES on a surface.

Before we get into how-to, I thought I spend a little time talking about the MVBlocks that are included with Civil 3D 2010. What you see in plan view can look very different in 3D view. These can work to our advantage in our Civil drawings.

MVBlocks are not loaded on the palette by default - you have to hunt for them a bit. Luckily, its simple! You can open up the Tool Palette on the ribbon by the Home tab and Palettes panel. Select the second little icon. You can also use the shortcut CTRL+3 to open it up.

Right-click on the grey part of the panel that says Tool Palettes - (and then whatever type you are using; Imperial or Metric). Once you Right-click on that, click on Civil Multiview Blocks. Your Tool Palette will change. When you click on an MVBlock, Civil 3D will prompt you for an insertion point. This is nominally the center of the tree.

There are quite a number of MVBlocks that you can bring into your drawings. Cars, People, Playground equipment, and of course trees.

A couple words of advice though

Some of the MVBlocks are NOT 3D from the standpoint of us bringing in the block and viewing it via the Object viewer as indicated below. Case in point. Bring in any of the Deciduous Trees (large or small). They look fine in plan view but when you object view them, they look like some sort of abstract art (or from my eye - an extruded X).

Some of the blocks come into your drawing at strange scales so if you really wish to use that block, you will have to do some experimenting. Case in point are the Deciduous Trees, Concept Trees, and Detail Trees. I'm not sure why they come in at these sizes but mine (and others) guesses are that they are throwbacks to the old DCA blocks.

The Landscape MV Blocks all come in at a scale of 1 which is desirable since we can then scale the X and Y factor to the canopy width, and use the Z factor as the desired viewing height.

So now that you have all these nice blocks into your drawing, how do you get them to show as they are on the surface? Very simple!

Click on the surface you wish to place the block on. The ribbon will change to a contextual state; that is all of the items in the ribbon are related to that surface only. Nice!

On the Surface Tools panel, click the drop-down arrow next to the Surface Tools. The menu will expand, showing you 'Move Blocks to Surface'. A dialog will pop up showing you all the blocks you have in your drawing. If you know the block names, you can select them from the list, otherwise, use the picker and pick the blocks individually.

Once you're done with that, pick your surface and the trees and Object view them. You now have planted your trees!

I hope that each of use takes the time to actually go out and plant a tree, or do something outside in honor of Arbor day. If you cannot, well at least you've planted 'pixel trees' and your clients will like the additions to your renderings. Happy Arbor day.

Civil 3D 2010 - HAPPY (google) EARTH DAY!

OK so it was really yesterday. What did YOU do to help our environment? Oprah had a segment on about the amount of trash that is ending up in our oceans - plastic, cans, refrigerators. We have GOT to be better stewards of our land or our sons, daughters, grandchildren will not have a fighting chance.

But enough about politics. I was playing around with the new Google Earth and decided to give a quick tour of its capabilities and Civil 3D 2010.

The latest Google Earth (as of this writing) is v5.0.11337.1968 and contains some pretty impressive things. You now have ocean view -you can take a tour underwater of the oceans. You can navigate to space and take a look at some of our neighboring planets - up close! You can download it here.

So what is and what isn't Google Earth? It is a good resource for getting mapping information. It isn't (or shouldn't) be used for design purposes as the contour information is basically USGS - 20' minor and 100' majors. And when you bring them into Civil 3D, they interpolate those in-between contours. It is good for getting a feel for the land for preliminary design work, drainage area mapping. Is isn't up to date. The view below is where I live! Note the lack of houses in that big field. And no, I don't camp out! :)

I have the right amount of area shown on my image that I want to import into Civil 3D. So I simply minimize Google Earth and open up Civil 3D 2010.

But before we get too involved here, let do some settings via the Settings. Google Earth is set by default to the Lat/Lon WGS84 projection. most of our work (in the States) is done via a State Plane. So Civil 3D has the 'smarts' to re project from their WGS84 into a projection set by us. Since I reside in South Central Pennsylvania area, my State plane is NAD83 Pennsylvania State Planes, South zone, US Foot or PA83-SF for the shortcut name. Once I set this information, any new data drawn, imported will be on this projection.

From the Insert tab and Import panel on the ribbon, I click on the Google Earth icon which has a fly-out. Our options are:

Google Earth Image - This will import ONLY the image

Google Earth Surface - This will import ONLY the surface and whatever your default surface style is set to. Out of the box, it is set to Contours 2' and 10' (Background).

Google Earth Image and Surface - This will (you guessed it) import both the image and surface into your drawing.

Google Earth Mesh - This command seems to be broken at present. A Service Request has been filed (you DO fill those out when you find something not quite right, do you???) Edit: Thanks to Bill Frederick of Synergis Technologies, the command is wrong in the CUI. If you type IMPORTGEMESH it works like a charm, the funny thing is the correct command is on the tooltip when you hover over it! If you edit the CUI and take out the AECC, the command works fine - I can blog later on CUI editing 101.

I want the image and surface. So after I select that, Civil 3D 2010 asks me once again to verify that I want the Google Earth projected into my projection. Yes I do.

And there you have it sports fans! An image and surface that is set to my projection. I can change the style of the surface to show anything I want now. I hope this might help you in your future google EARTH DAYS.

Welcome Screen - New Features and Best Practices

Today we're going to wrap up the Welcome screen so that in later blogs we can get into the meat of the program (simplified of course!)

New Features Workshop

This has been around for several releases now is provides a good overview of what's new. The nice thing about this is that you can actually see what's new in other releases too:

Civil 3D 2010 - This is the default.

AutoCAD 2010 - Always nice to see what's new here since all our programs are built upon this. It surprises me that very few actually know what is new in the plain AutoCAD releases that they can use to help simplify their life in civil 3D!

Map 3D 2010 - Since Civil 3D is built upon Map, its nice to see what's new with this release. And of course, Map is built upon AutoCAD. See how they all relate?

Civil 3D 2009

AutoCAD 2009

Civil 3D 2008

AutoCAD 2008 - These last four are nice to know too. I've used them on occassion to find a certain new feature and trace back to when it was implemented.

But let's look at the Civil 3D 2010 Screen for a bit.

The menu is broken down into four areas:

User Interface

Creating, Drafting, and Editing

Displaying and Visualizing

Managing Data

Notice the ongoing theme with Civil 3D - Task based. Try them out and see What's new!

Best Practices Guide

When you click on this, you are opening a PDF file which can be printed out so you have a 'book' - but be forewarned that this book is 210 pages long! This guide is based upon the Autodesk developers, beta testers, and user feedback for what makes Civil 3D work in the most efficient manner. Along with recommendations are things to avoid too.

While this guide is just that; a guide or overview. It is not meant to be comprehensive. But it does a good job, and if you follow the suggested recommendations you will find that your Civil 3D will be happier.

So to wrap up the Welcome screen, it is a good resource for: those who are not familiar with the product, Those who need a quick refresher, and those who have been using it for some time but run into brain cramps. - In other words it's good for everyone!

Civil 3D 2010 - The case of the missing icons

OK, so I closed my C3D 2010 down on Friday and start it up today. On the Annotate tab and Labels & Tables panel, the Add Labels and Add Tables icons are GONE! I can't even click in there thinking that perhaps they are just hidden - nope, they are GONE!

So, I start to think what is different from Friday to today. I stumbled up on this and I can reporduce it on my laptop and my workstation:

If you close C3D 2010 with the Anotate tab activate, restart C3D, the icons are GONE! If you change to the Home tab and close and reopen - go to Annotate tab, it is there.

So, I tried it with all the tabs and it seems like all of them do that.

So - until a fix or workaround is avaialble, remember to switch your tab to HOME before you shut down. EDIT - Thanks to Murph, another workaround is to go to a new workspace and then go back to the previous one and your Labels & Tables will be back. So, I thought a quick blurb on the install would be in order. If you are not on subscription, then you will have to wait until your box(es) arrive.

So, first of all, the file sizes of the downloads are pretty menacing! Civil 3D 2010 is broken down into two self-executing files:

AutoCAD_Civil_3D_2010_English_WIN_32bit.part1.exe = 3,906,250 KB

AutoCAD_Civil_3D_2010_English_WIN_32bit.part2.rar = 675,180 KB

There is also a Vault specifically for Civil 3D 2010 available for download. If you are using Vault, MAKE SURE YOU ARE USING THE ONE DESIGNED FOR CIVIL 3D!!

I would also highly recommend using the Download Manager that Autodesk provides. If you network crashes in the middle of the download, you simply reconnect to the subscription site and it will pick up form where you got dropped. Without this, you will feel the pain of starting the download all over again. To download the two files above, it took about 1.5 hours - YMMV depending on your internet connection.

Double-click on the ....part1 file and now wait while it crunches and decompresses the install. For this part, mine took about 20 minutes.

Now you are at the main install screen. You can install standalone, create deployments, install utilities and read documentation. I'm going to install as a standalone. Note: I have an install of Civil 3D 2007 AND 2009 on my machine already (why not 2008? - we decided as a company to to an 'every other year' install. so my users won't see 2010 until 2011 - company policy enacted)

So after I click on the Install, I am now asked to select the products I want to install. Since we are not a Vault shop, I disabled the Vault client.

Clicking on Next shows you a summary screen of what you have already selected and gives you the opportunity to change any items that are not correct.

Clicking on Next takes you to the User screen. Here you enter in your product code and Product Key. The Product key is a new addition to 2010. Someone else might blog on this , but I am thinking that it is a a checksum to make 100% sure that your license is valid.

Clicking on Next takes you to the main install screen. Here, you might as well go to lunch or do something else because your computer will not be usable during that time due to the large amount of memory taken for the install (at least that is the case with me). It installs Visual C++, Resign Review 2010 (another blog post at a later time), DirectX, Visual Basic Power Packs, Civil 3D 2010, and Language Packs. Time for this part was about 55 minutes.

Finally! after all of this the installer is done and you must restart your computer.

So to recap:

Download from Autodesk Subscription = 90 minutes

Decompression of files = 20 minutes

Actual install of Civil 3D 2010 and associated files = 55 minutes

Reboot computer = 2 minutes

Grand total of 2 hours, 47 minutes. And we haven't even gotten into the customization part yet - perhaps another blog.

Civil 3D 2010 - Learning Resources

Today, we're going to continue with the Welcome screen that shows up when you first fire up Civil 3D 2010.

The Learning Resources will take you a screen with lots of stuff to explore, but many of them are repeats as shown below. It should be noted that almost all of these can also be accessed from the main screen help too:

1. User Interface - This is the same as the User Interface Overview as blogged from before.
2. What's New - This is the same as the New Features Workshop that will be blogged on next.
3. Moving from LDT - This is a valuable file for those whose minds are still wrapped around Land Desktop. It talks about why one should move to Civil 3D, Shows Civil 3D Features and Benefits overview and a suggested workflow as you transition from LDT to Civil 3D.
4. Tutorials - It goes through a logical sequence and builds upon each other as it goes along. It is HIGHLY recommended that the new user, old user, and users that think they already know it all view these. I cannot tell you how many times a message on the discussion groups can be answered by one going through the tutorials first!
5. Civil 3D Help - I have noticed that over the years, the help has actually become very - helpful! In Civil 3D 2010, the help is broken down into work processes called By Task, By Feature, and By Job Role.
6. Best Practices Guide - This is the same as the Best Practices Guide found on the Welcome Screen and will be blogged on later.
7. User to User Discussion - Clicking on this will open your internet browser (you DO have internet access, do you?) and opens up the Autodesk Discussion forums. for those who wish to bookmark this site, it's discussion.autodesk.com/forums/civilcommunity.jspa. This is my second home! I depend on this site alot for figuring out various problems and even help another one along the way. It is user-based, but there are also Autodesker's the appear there from time to time. One of the best resources in ym opinio - hands down. Having said that, a note of caution too. Since it is user-based, there may be times when the solution given is not the only one or even the right answer. So Caveat emptor!
8. Technical Support - Clicking on this will open your internet browser and opens up the AutoCAD Civil 3D Services and Support webpage. for those who wish to bookmark the site, its www.autodesk.com/civil-support. This site has improved over the years, but not as much as the previously mentioned help that is built into civil 3D 2010. for example, typing a search phrase in the Services and Support may NOt find your results, but typing in a single key word MAY find the result. The fuzzy logic for searching help is still fuzzy in my opinion.
9. Subscription - Clicking on the will open your internet browser and takes you to the Autodesk Subscription home page. For those who wish to bookmark the site, its www.autodesk.com/subscription. If you're not on subscription, then this won't do you any good. But if you are, its an easy link to managing your subscription, checking for latest software and other management items.
10. Training Programs - Clicking on this will open your Internet browser and opens up another page of the AutoCAD Civil 3D Services & Support. For the bookmark, its www.autodesk.com/civil-training. This lists the available training resources that are available to you. some of them, once again are repeats and some are not free resources, but they are training resources.
11. Events & Seminars -Clicking on this will open your Internet browser and opens up the Civil Engineering Community Events page. the bookmark is civilcommunity.autodesk.com/events. Here, you can check on any events that are happening in your area via the filters.
12. Skill Builders - Clicking on this will open your Internet browser but opens up 'The Page You Were looking for Was Not found' :-o. Doing some digging, here is the correct page. [Edit: The final release fixes this link]
13. Explore hundreds of free resources in Autodesk's user community - Clicking on this will open your Internet browser and opens up the Main Civil Engineering Community page. Here you find literally hundreds of resources dealing with Training, Blogs, Discussions, Online Resources and Events; all dealing with Civil 3D. As of this writing, the 2010 content is sparse (due to its not really out in peoples hands yet).

Wow, that went longer than I anticipated! But I hope that it helped you out and SIMPLIFIED your Civil 3D search.

Civil 3D 2010 - Getting Started Movies

Today I want to continue on the Civil 3D 2010 Splash Screen. The mouse clicks on each step gives a 'click' sound. I'm not sure why they would have wanted this. Also, it is my opinion that the movies are bit fast to view some of the text. There is no (current as of the version that I have) method of slowing down or pausing. [Edit: the release version DOES have a nice fast-forward, rewind and pause button]

The demonstrations are well done visually.

It's a version 1.0, so I'm sure there will be more improvements in future releases.

Civil 3D 2010 - User Interface Overview

I'm going to start blogging about some of the features of civil 3D 2010. When you start up Civil 3D 2010, a Welcome splash screen appears. On this welcome screen, there is a plethora of things that can be blogged on:

Getting Started Movies

User Interface Overview

Learning Resources

New Features Workshop

Best Practices Guide

Today, I'm going to talk about the User Interface Overview. clicking on this brings up the help window but this window has lots of places to hover.

For example, by hovering over the number 3, information on the left-hand side will tell you that you are looking at the ribbon. If you click on the number 3, you will see an enlarged view of the ribbon.

This is a real nice addition to help the user interface newbie (which is probably most of us). Kudos to the team at Autodesk that developed this.

Making the old new - profile from single points

Yesterday my boss (who still lives and breathes grid paper) came up to me and asked if I could plot a profile from just a single shot of road enterline points that he provided. All he wanted was the centerline plotted. The road was a bit twisty in the plan view.

Knowing how he REALLY wanted me to do this (plotting points stationing and elevations would take an extraordinary amount of time), I thought that Civil 3D should be able to do this no sweat! I told him I'd like to give it go in Civil 3D. His response was "I don't care, just get it done".

So, knowing that a profile needs a surface and an alignment, I set to make the alignment. I did the old 'connect the dots' and then performed best fit lines and curves to establish a quasi-centerline. I also made a polyline from the point-to point shots with elevation.

Since I had points with elevations, I could create a surface from just those points, right? WRONG! The surface was disjointed and missing places where the surface deviated.

So, I knew that he only was concerned with the centerline and could care less about anything outside of that. But I needed a surface! So, I simply used the good old Feature Line Offset command! Remember that most of these Feature Line commands can also be used with polylines. I offset the centerline 10' to the right and left - just enough so that I could establish a surface.

I then, created a new surface and brought in all three polylines as breaklines and voila! I had a surface! So creating the profile was a snap. I put a BIG NOTE on ym no-plot layer indicating what I had done and that it should NOT be considered as accurate in any way, shape or form! I do these no-plot notes to inform future designers who might look at my work 20 years in the future and know what my intnentions were. Just another one of my CAD Manager SOP for all drafter/designers.

So, the total time spent on this little project COULD have been hours. In Civil 3D, it took less than a half an hour! AND, I impressed my boss - guess that makes my day complete.

Twitter Anonymous

Not anything to do with Civil 3D per se, but they say the first step is admission.

I admit it, I'm hooked on Twitter. I have the Chirpr on my gadget desktop at work and at home. It's almost like soap operas. Maybe it is the reason why Guiding Light is canceled after umpteen years of being on the TV.

When my internet is down at home, I start to sweat and palpitate from withdraw symptoms of twitter and internet in general. I pace the room and constantly mumble to myself about wondering what Lynn_Allen is up to and how civil3diva's speeches went. I unplug and re-plug in the router and cable modem box hoping to see the euphoric four lights blinking. My wife steers clear of me in these moments.

You can follow my gripes, comments, etc. by twittering to C3D_RickGraham.

I'll bet you that Twitter Anonymous t-shirts would sell good on CafePress.

FOUR Months!

Well, now that its a new year and FOUR months passed since my last blog entry I thought I would try to repent and have a go at it again.

To be fair, I have been busy doing other things such as co-authoring a book called Introducing Civil 3D 2010 with fellow author and good friend of Civil3d.com (James Wedding). This experience has been an eye-opening one. Although I'm not completely done yet, I can say I'm on the home stretch. I hope you all run out and pick one or two up when it comes out.

I have been busy in the beta field too. I have been on the Civil 3D 2010 and Impression 3 beta team. I really enjoy that process. not just because I get to play with the software, but more importantly my voice can be heard with issues/future developments. If you are interested in doing this kind of work, go to myfeedback and register!

So what kind of little Simple tidbit can I leave you with that no one else has blogged about? Well, the pickings are slim! lol I will say that the new ribbon interface in 2010 is nice! Once you get to see and play with it, you will be more productive. The ribbon is designed with workflow in mind. If you are doing annotative stuff, you just click on the Annotate tab at the top and all your favorites for annotation are there.

The contextual ribbons are just shear genius! If you click on an alignment, the ribbon will concentrate on just items having to do with that alignment. when you are done with that alignment the ribbon returns back to normal. Its almost scary the AI built in!

Well, that enough for now. Hopefully I'll be blogging more now that things are starting to wind down a bit .

Many ways to get to the same places

A colleague's Civil 3D installation was pooched - some of the menu choices were simply not working. Some of these menu choices could have been show-stoppers but thanks to Autodesk's insight, I could show them workarounds until I had time to fix the installation (which happened yesterday).

LABELS

By far, the easiest place to get many labels (not all of them, mind you) is from the General pulldown. When the dialog box comes up, you are given the choice of labeling Notes, Lines and Curves, Alignments, Parcels, Profile view, Section View, Surface and pipe Network. Whew! That's alot of labels found in one place!

The Lines and Curves, Alignments, Parcels, Profile view, Section View, Surface and Pipes can be found in their respective pulldowns.

The holdouts in this are found in the Survey and Grading pulldowns and is the figure labeling. I'm not sure why Autodesk didn't include these in the General section.

TABLES

The Survey,Line/Curve, Parcels, Grading and Alignment pulldowns offer the same table look and feel. You can enter in the same data - its just a matter of picking what type you want.

The Points, Surface, Sections and Pipes Tables are unique. I'm not sure why the General pulldown does not have a place for tables like it does for Labels - another wishlist item.

FEATURE LINES

These are placed in many of the pulldowns. These are broken down in many places to the task you want to do; elevations or geometry.

In the Survey pulldown, they are shown as Edit Figure Elevations and Edit figure Geometry.
In the Parcels pulldown, they are shown as Edit Parcel and Edit Parcel Elevations.
In the Grading pulldown, they are shown as Edit Feature Line Elevations and Edit Feature Line Geometry.

And of course, don't forget about the all-inclusive Feature line icons.

Simplified locations even made easier!

For your REFERENCE

How many times has this happened to you?

1. A project was started in Land Desktop and contains xrefs.
2. The project name was changed mid-stream.
3. You now have the task of opening every drawing and changing all xrefs to the new path.
4. Repeat this for the 46 drawings.
5. Swear, cuss, scream..

Well Reference Manager to the rescue! An obscure program that resides in the Autodesk folder under the Start/All Programs.

This little gem has saved my butt countless times. You enter in the drawing(s), and let the program whirr a bit while it loads all of them (I would recommend doing one or two to begin with so you get the feel for what this program does).

The actual magic begins when you select a file. Or more specifically select the xref tab on the left and then click in the xref drawing name. You are given the choice of Editing Selected Paths or Find and Replace. In this scenario, I chose to edit the selected path since the project name and number has changed.

All drawings that use this xref will be updated to the new location. so you might be thinking what does this have to do with Civil 3D? Well, the entire hard disk xref locations are hard-coded into Civil3D also. So the same applies there too. Play with it and see if it simplifies your life and blood pressure.

I'm going through AU withdraw symptoms now as they are just starting up as I type. I have had the privilege the last couple years of attending Autodesk University. this year but with the economy the way it is - the powers that be said that I could not go. Yes the big hoopla and parties are nice, but what I really miss is the interaction with fellow Civil3d-ites and the plethora of learning and knowledge that is available there. So, hopefully next year will be a different story.

Speech Recognition - yeah right!

I was showing some of the engineers and designers the built-in capability that Vista has with speech recognition. The subject was on Civil 3D 2009 Hydrology. The subject was well presented and received, but it was waaaaaaaay above my head :) Being in a room that is primarily PE's generated the deep-searching questions.

I did glean some stuff from the presentation though which; if it's simple enough for my brain to comprehend, it will be okay to post here - lol

1. Create your Drainage area using the catchment area calc and then turn it into a parcel! Use a separate site name so that it doesn't interfere with your other site stuff. Create a nice looking label using parcels. like DA1 (Name), and Drainage area.

2. When laying out your pipe network, a recommended method is to create a network, place ONE structure on your drawing - it doesn't matter where! Use the good old AutoCAD Copy, move, rotate and (dare I say) mirror to get your structures where you want them. The Structure names will be real funky, but that can be edited later. Then go back and edit that network and add pipes only. Make sure you add them upstream to downstream if you are going to bring into Hydra.

That's it for this post.

Surface editing

A lot of my focus lately has been on surfaces. And of late I've been playing with the various surface editing tools. Before I get into it, there are 2 schools of thought on surfaces:

A. The surface from the surveyor is gospel and shall not be edited in any way, shape or form.
B. The surface has some oddities that are NOT in the field and they need to be fixed.

I tend to lean toward the latter. Editing surfaces is an art. You might be hitting your head against a wall trying to figure out why the surface does this when you swap edges or worse yet, when you can NOT swap an edge. Just like learning a new language, it does not happen overnight. I still struggle with the why's and go to other more knowledgeable people for answers.

What I have found may or may not work for you, but it does work for me:

1. Do NOT delete lines inside your surface! You will create holes! Deleting lines is best for outside or outer perimeter editing.
2. Be CAREFUL when moving points! It might look good in the area that you are editing, but it may cause a snowball effect on the rest of your surface.
3. When deleting points (surface points, NOT survey points) to delete a group of points, press the C key for CROSSING.
4. If you have survey points that are not to be included in your surface, create a group of the points you want to include and then use that group.

I'll have more later - I'm sure.

Catchment Area

One of the nifty tools in 2009 is the catchment area. It is the opposite of the rain drop feature. It saves time especially when trying to figure drainage areas. I use the 2D option, so I can get an area. I haven't played with the 3D option, as I think it would give erroneous areas since it basically drapes itself over the surface and follows every hill and valley.

THEN - I can convert this into a parcel and get a nice area label for my Drainage Area mapping.

Nifty, eh?

Pasting Surface - order

A quick one to enter - Again, my posts might be very simplistic to some but epiphanies to others.

When you are pasting surfaces, the order in which you paste them is important!
